Cleaning and Caring for Leather
Leather is a by product of the meat industry. The hides and skins left after processing are sent to tanneries where chemicals are used to clean and preserve the hides. They are then divided into one or two layers with the underlayers called a split and the upper layer the 'grain' . Both can then be dyed and finished according to colour and usage.
It is traditionally 'grain' cow leather that is used for upholstery but with new technology there is an increasing use of splits and reconstituted leather (made from bonding leather shavings) as well.
Grading of leather is defined mostly by the quality of the surface of grain leather . Hides from different parts of the world vary in quality depending on the type of cattle and the care and nourishment they are given. Generally speaking, hides from European and US cattle produce better quality leather . Hides from third world countries, where the cattle are undernourished and suffer more disease and insect infestation need to be 'buffed' or 'corrected' more to remove surface damage. This removes part of the grain - so the leather is less natural and with more pigment necessary to finish properly results in a more artificial and firmer end product. Leather that is of a high quality has no or very little buffing is called 'aniline' named after the predominance of the dye as opposed to pigment that is used in the finishing process. This can be compared to the difference between the painting or staining of wood.
Leather Care
Part of the reason for the popularity of leather upholstery is that it is so easy to clean. Even the better aniline leathers are given a minimum of a protective surface during finishing so most minor stains can be removed with simply a cloth and mild soapy water.
For more stubborn stains there are specialist leather cleaning products available which should be used in any event for regular cleaning and maintenance.
It is also advisable to apply a specialist leather rejuvinator once or twice a year to reintroduce necessary oils that may have dried out over time.
It is because of this that leather furniture should not be left too near a heat source or over exposed to sunlight which can have the added effect of fading the finish over time. Lighter shades of leather are especially susceptible to fading and so cream leather sofas and such like should not be placed in conservatories.
Serious stains that cannot be removed even by specialist cleaners should be removed by a professional leather repairer who are easy to locate through the web or other directories.
